Chancellor Gordon Brown has told Sky Sports News that he feels England are well placed to win the race to host the 2018 World Cup finals.
Fifa have not yet indicated which continent will be handed the right to stage the world's greatest football event, but England are already making plans to host the tournament.
The Chancellor feels it is imperative England begin their planning as soon as possible and is of the opinion that the country will win support from around the world.
"I think we are in a pretty good condition and we need to build on that in the next few years," he told Sky Sports News.
"We have got great stadiums, we have got huge public support and there is a huge enthusiasm for this from the clubs and authorities.
"I have been going around the world, to Asia, America and Europe and there is great support for England having it 50 years after we won the World cup in 1966."
Brown believes England have to put forward a persuasive argument in order to win support from other nations.
"Everything is in place, now we have to go out and sell it and show the enthusiasm from young people is such that if we win, it will be the greatest sporting decade for our country with the Olympics in 2012 and World Cup in 2018," added Brown.
Brown feels the whole country will benefit, as he continued: "There are 11 World class stadiums, according to the reports we have got.
"They are spread across the regions of the country which is how the World Cup has got to work and will work. It is not just about London, it is about the whole country.
"Every part of the country will benefit from it and the enthusiasm, having talked to young players who will hope to be players at that World Cup, is apparent."
England failed in their bid to host the 2006 World Cup finals and Brown feels lessons have been learned.
"What we have to do is win support," stressed Brown. "The last time England bid, we did not have the support from the rest of the world. I have been in Asia, America and Europe and I feel this time we will get the support.
"The lesson is you have got to start early and we are doing that. We have got to be prepared and it is a matter of course for the football authorities but the government are saying early on that we are ready.
"We are making it our mission to ask other countries to support the England bid and we feel we are better placed than last time."
